AID FOR BAM SHOWS WORLD GENEROSITY,
SAYS IRAN DIPLOMAT

KUALA LUMPUR: Rebuilding the earthquake-stricken city of Bam
will be a testimony of the international community's generosity,
Iranian ambassador to Malaysia Mohammad G. Mohebali said.
He said the major concern now was to raise enough money to rebuild
homes of those affected.
"It will take some time before the situation goes back to normal,
at least five years. When it is done, the city will be rebuilt
with international help," he said.
Mohebali said this after receiving a RM10,000 cheque from Adabi
Consumer Industries Sdn Bhd president Abdul Hady Zabil at the
embassy here yesterday.
Houses became instant tombs
for more than 30,000 residents Friday last week after
an earthquake measuring 6.5 on the Richter scale hit the
ancient city, destroying wonders of Iran's cultural heritage
including a 2,000-year-old citadel.
Built entirely of mud bricks, clay, straw and the trunks
of palm trees, the city's old quarter dates back to pre-Islamic
times, although most of the monuments were from Iran's
modern heyday under the Safavid rulers of the 16th and
17th centuries.
Last week, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi
announced that the Government would contribute US$500,000
(RM1.9mil) to help Iran cope with the devastation. |
